Los avances acerca del conocimiento, tecnología y técnicas de entrenamiento que han tenido lugar en los últimos años han propiciado la elaboración de este libro. El objetivo primordial de la obra es explicar cómo diseñar y llevar a cabo programas de evaluación, cómo desarrollar protocolos de evaluación específicos al deporte, las instrucciones para la administrar las distintas pruebas y cómo interpretar resultados de forma que se puedan prescribir programas de entrenamiento dirigidos a que los deportistas alcancen un rendimiento máximo. Para ello, los capítulos del libro se centran en la evaluación de la fuerza, la flexibilidad, la potencia aeróbica y anaeróbica, la composición corporal y la antropometría. Un capitulo concreto se ocupa de la evaluación del estado de salud del deportista dirigido a aquellos médicos que crean conveniente planificar los exámenes médicos de los deportistas a su cargo para que coincida con su evaluación fisiológica. El último capítulo propone un modelo a seguir para la supervisión de la adaptación del deportista al entrenamiento. Uno de los temas en que insiste el libro es el de que las pruebas deben ser específicas al deporte que se desea practicar. Este libro está dirigido a científicos que se encargan de la evaluación y supervisión del deportista de alto rendimiento, a directores técnicos de organismos deportivos, a entrenadores y a deportistas. Asimismo, debido a la cantidad de información teórica incluida en cada capítulo, este libro es un texto de referencia muy aconsejable para cualquier curso de estudiantes de fisiología del ejercicio o medición y evaluación. Los autores, J. Duncan Mac Dougall, Howard A. Wenger y Howard J. Green, son tres conocidos fisiólogos canadienses miembros, respectivamente, del Departments of Physical Education and Medicine in the McMaster University, School of Physical Education in the University of Victoria, Department of Kinesiology in the University of Waterloo.
